He was a priest, confessor, theologian and historian. He translated most of the bible  into Latin in his famous work known as” the Vulgate” from the Greek New Testament and his commentaries on the gospels are very familiar as well. He was a prolific translator who also updated the “Psalter “which contained the book of Psalms. This translation was based on the “Septuagint” at use in Rome at that time.

Some of the other works he translated were: fourteen homilies on the book Jeremiah and Ezekiel by Origen and two homilies from the book of the Song of Solomon also by Origen. He also translated his own works from these Old Testament books: Genesis, Ecclesiastes and the Psalms. His New Testament works were: Philemon, Galatians, Ephesians and Titus. He also translated Mark, Luke and Revelation.  The gospel of Matthew he dictated in one night in 398.His work “The Vulgate” dominated Western Christianity in the middle ages.
